RSGB Contest Summary 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Written by John Taylor

During 2011 there were 42 RSGB  HF Contests of all types and Modes mainly on 80 mtrs in the evenings. The club managed to enter 37 of them. The full results will be available on the RSGB web site very soon...

In the main the results have been very encouraging for the club but sadly lacking in certain areas. The average over all position was mostly around 2 thirds the way up the score cards e.g., In the Club Championships League Table Preston ARS are listed as 37th out of 91 entries. There were a couple of exceptions worth noting, in the Low Power Contest a nice 5th place but in the SSB Field Day, .....well,...... best say nothing.

I have entered the full fixtures for 2012 on the Club Web Site “Calendar.” There are 39 contests on offer this year. The “Sprints” have been shortened from 90 to 60 mins. which unfortunately I feel will give the advantage to the “Hares” and leave us “Tortoises” short of the finishing line.

However, I would love to see a few more stations showing interest this year particularly in the SSB and DATA sections. If you fancy CW then HRD will send AND receive it for you. 99% of contest CW is PC generated these days anyway!

If you need assistance of any kind either setting up DATA and CW on your PC/Radio or hints & tips about the contests please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time.

Happy new Year and Good Luck in 2012

Outage PDF Print E-mail

Sorry for the site being down for the past fortnight. Websites need two suppliers - the hosting service, which keeps the website data; and the registrar, which links the site to the internet and holds the site name. It was the latter, which held our registration in the name of a club member who is no longer with us (and who set up the original site 4 years ago), that cut us off when their fee was not paid.

Getting in touch with said member and working out how to transfer ownership of the name (prestonars.co.uk) was what took all the time, and the complexity of the process is the reason we did not do it 2 years ago when the fee last came up for renewal. The name is now registered to the club.

GB0LMR PDF Print E-mail

Preston Amateur Radio Society will be activating GB0LMR from the Miniature Railway located in Worden Park, Worden Lane, Leyland (Special thanks go to Steve 2E0ZIX for providing the shack and most of the equipment. Big Thank You Steve!)

The Miniature Railway is built and operated by the Leyland Society of Model Engineers. This group was first formed in the 1930s as Preston Society of Model Engineers, but was disbanded due to the outbreak of WW2. It was reborn as the Leyland, Preston and District Society of Model Engineers to commemmorate the Preston Guild of 1952. The Society finally located at Worden Park in Leyland, now using several guages and tracks.

For further information see www.sarno.freeserve.co.uk/leyland/hist.htm

Update

Thanks to Allen (G4PF), Colin (M6AYH), Richard (M0RDZ), Douggie (G7CDA) and family for joining us. Most of all thanks to Brian (2E0DXN) and Steve (2E0ZIX) for setting up the station.

On the 25th September the Mayor of South Ribble took the youngest club member (Alex Sorley, aged 9, M6CDA) for a train ride and Alex was using a 2m hand-held to contact the station. We think this is the very first time ham radio has been used on a model steam train in motion.
