- Registered centre
- Preston Amateur Radio Society is an official Examination Centre, registered by Ofcom and the Radio Society of Great Britain. We run courses in all three grades of proficiency. The essential difference between the levels is the power at which the licensee is permitted to use in transmission, and the corresponding level of responsibility that is expected.
- We believe the future of the Society and indeed Amateur Radio will be found in the new members and licensees.
- Our Lead Instructor is Mr Eric Eastwood - G1WCQ
- History
- The Society first began training courses in 1994, with 11 pupils, and has gone on from strength to strength. In 1994, it was only the Novice course - later renamed Intermediate - and has continued ever since. The Foundation Course was started on 7th February 2002 with 11 pupils. We are now on the fourteenth course, with the 74th pupil.
- The youngest pupil was seven and the eldest sixty-seven. Eric has taught partially sighted, dislexic, and a whole family - mother and three sons - all of whom passed. Our most recent full licensee is a Japanese member of the Society.
- Foundation License
- We pride ourselves in the success rate of our Foundation License Training. The Foundation License training takes part over a 6 week period. Preston Amateur Radio Sociely is a registered examination centre and all foundation licenses are taken at The Lonsdale Club. Contact us to discuss available training courses and/or general advice.
- You are expected to know elements of electrical circuits, band plans, morse code, basics of radio propagation and how to conduct a radio conversation.
- On successful completion, you are issued a call-sign of the form M6AAA, and permitted to transmit at 10 watts. For details of permitted bands (band plans) see the RSBG foundation license booklet.
- Intermediate License
- We offer training for the Intermediate License. In our experience, newly qualified foundation license holders quickly wish to progress to the Intermediate License. It is our policy to offer continual development to our members. Contact us to discuss available training and for general advice.
- You are expected to have a more extensive knowledge of radio and electronics, and to be able to construct and analyse simple circuits, including soldering skills.
- On successful completion, you are issued a call-sign of the form 2E0AAA, and may operate up to 50 watts.
- Full License
- We offer training for the Full License. In our experience, newly qualified Intermediate license holders quickly wish to progress to the Full License. It is our policy to offer continual development to our members. Contact us to discuss available training and for general advice.
- On successful completion, you are issued a call-sign of the form M0AAA, and may operate up to 400 watts.
- CW (Morse) Training
- We offer training for CW (Carrier Wave). In this mode, the morse key switches the transmitter on when pressed. In our experience, we find CW is a mode many amateurs prefer and we have a number of instructors in the club to teach and train CW skills at your own pace. Contact us to discuss available training and for general advice.
